Q: El Capitan: Apple TV3 peer to peer Airplay problems
I'm having a real game trying to get p2p (e.g. not via wifi router) Airplay working in any way reliably or consistently with a 2015 rMBP and ATV3. Sometimes it works and connects but 95% of the time no. I have tried EVERY suggestion under the sun from forgetting networks, restarting the ATV and MBP etc etc etc but to no avail. My iPhone 6 can see the ATV and connects correctly every time after putting in the password from the on TV screen prompt. The MBP I've got to connect a few times out of hours and hours of trying.
I have a feeling it is something to do with the MBP getting cluttered up remembering phantom and out of date ATV names. My ATV is named Living Room ATV. The Airplay connect icon however insists on remembering a device called 'Apple TV (3)'. I have tried renaming/rebooting the ATV multiple times but EVERY time this Apple TV (3) shows in my Airplay list but I can NEVER connect to it. My device appeared correctly named once but once I disconnected from it (to check it would work reliably) and turned off bluetooth etc., as soon as I tried to reconnect to it the device was no longer there but Apple TV 3 was.
I've searched all over trying to find how to flush out wherever the MBP / El Capitan is recalling this phantom device from. Most of the advice relates to renaming the ATV, rebooting, putting a space after the name etc. But on the MBP it is very very patchy as a fix, in fact it works once then it's back to hours of trying to get it working again. The iPhone however picks up the name change straight away and is able to connect without rebooting the ATV or phone. The MBP however insists on remembering Apple TV (3) which I don't have.
I'm sure the is an El Capitan issue, not a ATV software problem (running most up to date on everything). After 3 days at a few hours a day trying to get this working I'm about ready to give up.
Apple TV (3rd generation), null
