How do I stop iMessage (phone) from ringing when the Messages app is open on my Mac?

When the Messages app on my laptop, but not in focus, my iPhone still rings whenever I receive a message. This is incredibly annoying. Does anyone know a way to suppress the phone notification without disabling iMessage entirely?

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.2, And Mac OS El Capitan

I get messages on the Mac just fine. The problem is that I get messages (and the resulting notifications) on both devices at the same time. Having my phone whine every 30 seconds while I'm using the IM client on my Mac is not particularly useful.

(Do Not Disturb mode has ramifications beyond disabling the message notifications.)

What I ideally want is to suppress the iMessage notifications on the phone when the Messages app is open. It works properly when the Messages window has focus but not when it's running in the background.
