Apple TV 4 doesn't recognize my HDMI to VGA converter

I purchased a Kanex ATV Pro to connect my new Apple TV 4 to an older VGA projector. The Kanex adaptor works just fine with an older 2nd Gen Apple TV. However the Apple TV 4 simply shuts down as soon as a connect the Kanex to its HDMI output. Even after changing resolutions settings and performing a software update on he Apple TV (with a borrowed HDMI-capable monitor), I still do not get any signal out of the Kanex.

The gen 4 apple TV doesn't have any power out over HDMI, so any HDMI to VGA adapter will need a separate power input.

Contact Kanex first to see what they say, also end feedback to Apple.

I used to have one of those and it worked very well with ATV 2/3.

I replaced my VGA projector a couple of years ago for an HDMI equipped one so can't confirm if the Kanex still works with my AppleTVs 1-4.

Many were surprised that the Kanex actually worked with AppleTV in the first place as it allowed DRM protected video to be played on older VGA equipment which was fantastic for the any of us with older but functional projectors.

Terrible experience with Kanex. I contacted their customer support and they told me I bought the wrong connector as the Apple TV 4 doesn't provide power. They instructed me to buy this: http://www.kanex.com/appletv-4th-gen-vga - which I did, BUT, the cable doesn't support HDCP, so all I can see is Apple TV 4 menus and YouTube (nothing from HBO GO/Showtime/etc). Now I have paid for $100+ worth of Kanex adapters, none of which work. The first cable was purchased through AMZN, so I have to return to that vendor. Kanex now admits that it doesn't have a VGA adaptor and is asking me to pay a 20% restocking fee for the one IT TOLD ME to buy. They either can't read/write in English, or purposefully mislead customers to buying its products KNOWING that they do not work.

I followed the link in your post, and the wording is very tricky. It seems to say they only support ATV4 via AirPlay mirroring, while roku can handle general streaming. Presumably ATV4 does a more complete job of HDCP, and refuses to connect to equipment offering doubtful security. This http://www.howtogeek.com/208917/htg-explains-how-hdcp-breaks-your-hdtv-and-how-t o-fix-it/ might offer a useful clue, though no guarantees there either...

That is poor.
