I found the command .AppleSetupDone and I need to know if i use i will lose my files


I have tried Everything else to get admin privileges on my used mac i bought

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

The complete command is


sudo rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone


and must be done by rebooting in single-user mode. Hopefully the instructions you found mention this. If not, post back and I'll clarify.


No, it will not delete any files - when you reboot, you will be presented with the setup screens and will be prompted to add a new admin user. Any previous users will be kept.

From the nature of your question I am suspecting you are not very familiar with the detailed operation of Macs, nor familiar enough with the hazards of using a pre-owned system. If you bought a used Mac you would be smart to erase the whole thing and start with a fresh installation. Who knows what may still reside on the computer? Unless you know and really trust the previous owner you don't know the status as to malware, etc. You can call Apple and ask them about copies of original OS installer discs, or if you want an upgrade it is likely still possible to buy those. If the computer came with OSX 10.6 originally you need copies of the originals, not the retail installer. Discs will be a matter of $20-$30.
