Hi ramapyari,
You are running Disk Utility on your MacBook Pro and get a message showing the error you mention. Since you mention that the computer will not start, I presume that you are booting to Recovery when this occurs. Is that right?
Do you get any further messages from Disk Utility, such as it repaired issues, or the disk could not be repaired? I would suggest running the Disk Utility again, and note if there are any changes in the results. If there are any changes, continue to rerpair disk until no changes occur. See this article - OS X: About OS X Recovery and this one - Disk Utility (El Capitan): Repair a disk
Report back here with the results so we can advise how to proceed.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Sincerely.
I have this same issue, with a twist. I can't boot El Capitan in safe mode but I can get Disk Utility to run and it generates the "incorrect number of threads" message. It cycles through several rounds of repair but the same error keeps cropping up. Then it said "the volume could not be repaired after three attempt. File system exit check code is 8. Updating boot support partitions for the volume asmFile system verify or repair failed. Operation failed."
So I restarted in Target mode and connected it to another MacBook Air with a thunderbolt cable. It recognized my Bootcamp Windows 7 partition but not my Mac partition.
Then I rebooted the Windows partition which uses an old copy of Macdrive 8. It can see my entire file structure and open those files. I backed up all of the essential documents and am now considering reinstalling the operating system but I am mystified and would like to know why, if the files and directories are intact and can be viewed from Windows, is it not possible to repair the disk so that El Capitan can boot as before?
IRonically this all happened after I backed up the Windows partition last night. I did a restart I order to open theMac partition to do a backup but could not get to the end of the start process. There was no indication of trouble before that. Of course this is a mid-2012 Air so it's off warranty, but in any case I don't think there's anything wrong with the drive, which is solid state.
