alt shortcut for German umlaut, alt-o only makes an "ø" not "ö"

Is it possible to set the alt-u shortcut so it only produces German umlauts instead of Scandinavian special characters?

alt-o only makes an "ø" not "ö" on my keyboard.

alt-a only makes an "å" not "ä" on my keyboard.

alt-u works fine to make "ü"

Thanks

Are you using the US keyboard layout? Some ways to get your umlauts:

You could hold down the key for the base letter and then select the umlaut version from the popup menu that appears.

You could create keyboard shortcuts to do that in system prefs/keyboard/shortcuts.

You could switch to the US International PC layout where you make umlaut by typing " followed by the base letter.

You could create a custom keyboard layout using the apps Ukelele or Karabiner.

Or you could use the standard Mac shortcut for umlaut, which is option u followed by the base character.

Jep, I dont have a SmartKeyboard for testing. But I'm used to type my german umlauts on an international keyboard on my Mac. So if this works as you say on the SmartKeyboard with iPad as well, I don't see the trouble everybody has with Apple just selling an international Keyboard with the iPad.

Thanks for clearing this up for me!
