Contrary to what you read, posting "etrecheck" stuff on this site is not the right way to get help.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES â–¹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View â–¹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

Thanks for your response, Linc Davis,

I get this:

everytime the spinning beach ball shows up, while I'm doing minor operations, like opening a new window for finder...

I googled it, seems to be the cloud keychain? I deactivated it, so far things seem to be working more smoothly. Thanks a lot for your help so far.

Is there a way to fix it? I would like to use the keychain..

Contrary to what you read posting EtreCheck logs is an excellent way to get help.

EtreCehck is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us here in ASC in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information. The advice you are getting is from a user who has never tested the software for himself and so knows nothing about it.

It's a great place to start so we can provide more specialized help beyond that. I can't help someone who has a slow computer if I don't know what they have on their computer that might be causing the slowness. 9 times out of 10, it's something ridiculous like cleaners, AV software, out-of-date drivers, browser extensions.....simply removing them many times causes a marked increase in speed and functionality. You may prefer your way to EtreCheck.

Hello bthelaughingman,

Whether or not you have deleted EtreCheck, I think you should download and run it again.

Your EtreCheck report took over 37 minutes to run. A machine like yours should run EtreCheck in about 3 minutes. I really don't think that a keychain sync problem would lock up your machine to this extent. There is certainly no connection between these background processes and Finder operations. Usually it takes a hard drive failure to do that. Your hard drive is right type and age to be failing about now. A hard drive failure may very well trigger a cascade of other failures. But those would be symptoms, not causes.

Thank you, ertresoft!

I ran the test again. It is a bit quicker now - 24 mins, but still far away from 3 minutes. How do I find out if it is a hard drive problem? Disk utility didn't find anything, but caused a lot of beach ball...

Hello again bthelaughingman,

No. 24 minutes is not quick. The console log is 99.9% useless. Sometimes a failed hard drive gives some notice like a SMART failure, kernel I/O failures, or loud noises. But otherwise, you have to use the "duck test" - if it looks like a failed hard drive, and sound like a failed hard drive, then it probably is. The only definitive test is to replace the hard drive and see if that resolves the problem. Luckily, replacing a hard drive is one of the cheapest, fastest, and easiest repairs you can perform.

Probably the only thing you can still do on your side to diagnose is to boot into safe mode (OS X Yosemite: Start up in safe mode) and run EtreCheck again. In some cases, antivirus or "clean up" software can interfere with normal operation so much that it runs as slowly as it would with a failed hard drive. But then again, safe mode itself is very slow. Plus, you don't have any 3rd party software that is likely to cause such a problem.

You can take your machine to an Apple Store (https://www.apple.com/support/contact/) or Apple Authorized Service Provider (https://locate.apple.com/) for diagnostics. I would recommend an Apple Authorized Service Provider because they would be more likely to give you an upgrade to an SSD.

I also have a very slow MacBook Pro (mid-2012). Is this just a RAM issue?

Here're are the diagnostics:
