I just got an Amazon Fire Tv Stick that I was hoping to use with my iMac late 2009 model. However, it will not enter target display mode. I'm not sure if I need a different cable though. I have simply connected the Fire Tv Stick to a mini display port cable (i.e the mini display port cable goes into the iMac and then the other end has the slot to plug a HDMI wire into it). Should this be working or is the cable not correct?

I just wanted to not have to always open things in the browser as I use the mac from my bed and it's sometimes difficult to see the mouse from that distance. So it would have been nice to be able to use prime, netflix, iplayer etc with the remote where you simply just click click click! I may try the converter as Amazon have a good returns policy and see how it goes, but £80.00 is a little excessive just to have the convenience of using a remote and having everything under an app!

I think you mis understand what Target Display Mode is. TDM is explained in Apple's article, please click Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). TDM is not designed to view iMac content on a TV.
Please describe what your goal is and then we may be able to help you out.
You don't need a firestick you can install the software directly to your computer. Its called Kodi. Once you install looking for the proper Kodi builds.

I am simply looking to plug the Fire TV Stick into the iMac and use the iMac as a 'screen' for the fire tv stick? I have read that this model of iMac is capable of playing PS3 etc using the target display mode, and is thus not solely used to display another mac screen onto the iMac scree, but to be able to display the Fire Tv Stick?
Sorry if that still does not make any sense, I am currently researching and researching, but have found nothing.
(Basically, I do not have a TV in my bedroom, only my iMac which I would like to continue to use as a screen (i watch iplayer etc on it) but would like to use the Fire TV stick so that netflix, bbciplayer etc are available in one place and controlled through the fire stick remote)

You are using the Fire TV Stick wrongly, it connects to an HDTV, not a computer.
Read the user guide or refer to the website here: Amazon Fire TV Stick
Please READ the FAQ I provided a link for. You will see TDM is not designed for what you want to achieve.
If you want to use your Amazon product with your iMac then I'd suggest contacting Amazon for support, they would know best.

I have the article you provided and I see it says only to display other mini display port devices to the iMac but then I came across articles that suggest otherwise so I thought it may be possible!

Sorry nickyheise, it will not work the way you are attempting to use it. You can attempt to get the Kanex device if you want to however if it will work or not the way you are attempting is very questionable. In short you will have to try it yourself, if you do get it to work please post back with your results.
Why would you want to do this? Can't you watch Amazon prime video in your browser? Why would you need a separate device? I'm not a prime member, but it seems they have some programming that's free to watch (with commercials). Just launched an episode of 'The Wire' in Safari (it apparently requires the Silverlight plugin) and it worked just fine.
Using the Belkin av360 and shifting to Target Display Mode I was able to get the Amazon Fire Stick to work. The display maxes out at 720p but I can play any video game system, dvd player, or any component with an hdmi out to work. There are a couple on ebay but they are no longer manufactured.
