Q: Using a 2011 iMac a second monitor for 5k imac
I have a mid 2011 iMac and a late 2015 k5 iMac.
I know the 5k cannot be used as an external display but could I use it as the host machine and the mid 2011 iMac as the display.
I have tried with a thunderbolt cable and Command F2 and fn-Command F2 but nothing works.
Any help or advice appreciated.

Your 2011 iMac should work as the display for your 2015 iMac, you are correct it won't work the other way around, but why would you want to? Check your cable orientation and make sure that they're plugged in tight. Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support
Note: iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and later iMac models can't be used as Target Display Mode displays.
Use Target Display Mode
Follow these steps to start using your iMac as a display:
- Make sure both computers are turned on.
- Connect the Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt cable between the two computers.
- Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac that you want to use as a display.
After you press Command-F2, your iMac displays the desktop from the connected Mac.
