How to view/recover photos and videos from my passport for MAC

I backup my entire MAC on My Passport for MAC. When I go into time machine, I can locate the photo icon but can't seem to open it. It will just display how may gigs are in the program. How do I open up Photos on My Passport for MAC

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

If you are using your Passport for Time Machine backup, I strongly recommend that you do not store your data on that disk drive. The storage of your data on the same disk drive as Time Machine will cause problems for TM when it needs to cleanup disk space for additional backups. Plus any data stored on the same disk drive that TM is using can't be backup.

I strongly recommend that you get an additional disk drive for your data.

When you backup with Time Machine if you delete the original file off your Mac that makes the backup copy of the file a candidate for deletion from the backup. For this reason, you don't want backup for what you are trying to do.

What you want is another disk drive and move your photos and videos to it. Then make sure the software sees the photos and videos at the new location. Once you do that you can then delete the original files.

This will also allow Time Machine to backup the photos and videos in their new location as soon as you configure it to do that.
