Q: System crashes with El Capitan

Since I installed El Capitan (a couple of months ago) I've had regular system crashes. I'm lucky to get 2 hours of uninterrupted use. It doesn't seem to matter what apps are running, it even happens when the machine is idle. I've run EtreCheck, and subsequently Malwarebytes AntiMalware, but this had no effect. I've updated to 10.11.1 and yesterday to 10.11.2, but again to no effect. Strangely, almost all of the crash logs mention "com.Symantec.kext.intenetSecurity", but I uninstalled Symantec when the license expired, and even ran "RemoveSymantecMacFiles" app, so I don't understand why there are any Symantec fragments remaining. I'm running a 2.7GHz iMac with 8Gig of memory. Any help would be appreciated.

How about posting that EtreCheck report?

Post an EtreCheck  report of your system and we will look for obvious issues. If you installed ANY antivirus which it appears that you or someone that access to the computer did that and any another antivirus or cleaning app is causing your issues. El Capitan is stable, however it, like all versions of OS X runs best if left alone.

Sorry, I'm not sure that I've gone the right way about getting this report into the system. Didn't know whether I should have amended the original post, but I'll learn.

Here is the EtreCheck report. The Symantec AV expired 12 months ago, long before the trouble started, and I didn't run the cleaning app until well after the crashes started, so I can't really see them being the problem.

    EtreCheck version: 2.6.6 (226)

Your system is a mess because you have Symantec Antivirus installed. As mentioned earlier AV is worthless on OS X and tends to create more problems than it solves. Fully uninstall it per the developers instructions!!

    In addition you have installed:

    GoPhoto.it  Adware! [Click to remove]

DivX Plus Web Player HTML5 <video>

The GoPhoto.it adware must be uninstalled as well.

OS X is extremely sound, it only malfunctions when people attempt to modify it. AV, cleaning or ANY other maintenance utilities is worthless and potentially harmful to OS X.

rkaufmann87 is correct. You need to properly get rid of the Symantic software, all of it, and the adware. You've done well with the EtreCheck report, any chance you could post a recent panic log? Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic - Apple Support

Here is the latest panic report.

I removed GoPhoto a couple of days ago, and I thought I removed Symantec AV 12 months ago. I can't find any sign of it in Finder.

almost all of the crash logs mention "com.Symantec.kext.intenetSecurity", but I uninstalled Symantec

Evidently you didn't uninstall it completely. The "etrecheck" stuff is irrelevant.

Please remove the Norton/Symantec product by following these instructions. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. If you tried to remove it by dragging an application to the Trash, reinstall it and finish the job.

Back up all data before making any changes. Never install any "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" product again.

The instructions referred to tell me to double-click on "Norton Securities" in the applications folder, but there's no such app in the folder, nor is there any "Symantec" entries in that folder. In fact, if I do a Finder search on the iMac device for Norton or Symantec I get nothing.

The EtreCheck "stuff" is totally relevant as is the panic log showing that the panics start when the symantic stuff starts to load. Not all of us are OS X uber geeks like yourself and EtreCheck is very helpful to us. If you don't like it just ignore it.

As I wrote, if you partially removed Norton, you'll have to reinstall it to finish the job. If you've already done that and the instructions are simply wrong for your version, please refer to the developer for support.

I tried that app when my problems started, but I ran it again today. As you can see from the screen shot below, the app couldn't find anything to delete. I also downloaded an app which removes the Symantec Administration Console (which isn't removed by RemoveSymantecMacFiles) , but couldn't get it to work (a problem with privileges).

Yes, it says the kexts are loaded. I've actually run the app twice today, and the report is from the second run. These kexts, are they generated at start-up or are they a permanent file? I can't find them with a Finder search.
