Q: how do i rent a HD movie on my HD computer. because i tunes is telling me i can only play the movie rental in SD?

It sounds like you have rented a movie in SD and want to watch it in HD instead or you are only seeing the option to rent it in SD. Not all movies are available in HD. In order to rent a movie in HD most movies have the option of switching between SD (which is a little bit cheaper) and HD. Here is an example from the iTunes Store with SD chosen:

If you have the option for HD on this rental and you have not watched the movie yet, then you may be able to get a refund from the iTunes Store support so you can rent the HD version instead:
