I Have 3rd gen Apple TV unit connected to the TV by USB wire.
1. I followed the instructions re. Set up
2. I am getting no Apple logo screen
3. When the selecting the USB as source I get message"no storage units available"
4. The white light flashes rapidly

The Apple TV 3 needs to be connected to the TV by HDMI.
The USB port is for emergency reflashing of the ATV memory. Remove the USB cable and connect the ATV to the TV with a HDMI cable.
I have connected my Apple TV (3d gen) to my MacBook Pro. It does not show up in iTunes. On my aluminum controller I have tried holding down menu & down ring button. Apple TV goes to ultra rapid flashing while buttons are down, but there is no recognition of the device in iTunes.

Or as they suggest, go to the Apple Genius Bar and have them do it.
Thank you for recommendation re. ATV restore. The major issue is that the device does not show as being connected in iTunes (I'm using the Apple supplied USB wire) after following Churchill's and your recommendations. Regrettably we are in a remote part of Patagonia, brought the ATV w/ us to access Netflix and similar streaming services, so going to an Apple Store/Genius Bar is not possible. I will purchase an HDMI cable to see if I can get to a function screen, but since the ATV is not showing in the iTunes, I'm afraid I won't have a positive result. Will confirm if I do.
