Hi folks
I need to replace the battery in mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13 inch.
Is it best to go with genuine Apple?
Or are there recommended after market brands to suit?
If genuine and original is the way to go, where is the best place to purchase? Is there a part number to look out for?

An Apple store is the best place to get the battery replaced. Note that you get a 1 year warranty with the battery.
If for some reason you cannot get an Apple battery, I can only recommend two third party options; Nupower batteries from OWC or Anker batteries. Inexpensive batteries from ebay or on Amazon should be treated as high risk propositions. They may be very inexpensive, but in the long run may cost you more. There are many tales of woe on these forums with battery 'bargains'.

Yes the machine had the battery removed hence why it was purchased extra cheap. The seller said the battery cycle had ended and removed the battery.
I have since managed to grab a Nupower battery from OWC as an online store had a storewide discount sale on.

This particular MacBook Pro did not come with a battery, so I unfortunately don't have the option of getting it serviced.

Are you saying that the internal battery has been removed? That's pretty unusual, but the service center or store should still be able to handle replacing it. See your service options above.
