Installing new memory

We have an early 2011 13" MacBook Pro and are upgrading the memory (RAM and HD). Currently the computer has 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 and 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. Can a bare drive be installed before downloading the OS X or would it be best to transfer the data first then upgrade?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
