use older ipod mini with newer mac

Is there a way to use an older ipod mini (have a few I have given to friends and kids, one with compact flash drive too) with a newer mac. Seems newer itunes will not recognize, but wonder if there may be other ways or programs that can help put music on and back up. Any help appreciated.

Hi Kenichi,

Thanks for reply...I just retried the iPod Mini and it works on iTunes (11.4) on my iMac. I did install a new battery and gave it a full charge that may have made a difference. I have also put compact flash drives in ipod minis..way cool. What brand did you use for your 64GB as I have learned not all brands work...and I have only used 8gb but may like to upgrade...let me know if you can. Still think the minis are way cool:)

Peace,

Rick

I hope that means you topic problem is resolved... 🙂 Or, are you saying it works with an older version of iTunes, but not the current version.

I noticed that SDXC cards (smaller size than compact flash) are significantly cheaper (on average) for the same storage capacity. I bought this SD card to compact flash adapter.

This adapter is physically the same size as the original MicroDrive. You can use the same wrap-around "padding" used on the MicroDrive. There is no need to add anything to take up the excess space (because most compact flash cards are thinner than the MicroDrive). The SDXC card in the adapter is by Sony. I bought it a while ago (to use with my Mac), but I think it's this one

Kenichi,

Yes it worked. Thanks for the info on using an SDXC card with SD to CF adapter! So looks like I could upgrade a mini to a 64 GB for $30. I'm not sure if you are aware of the origins of this hack by Mark Hoekstra of GeekTechnique: http://www.geektechnique.org/projectlab/753/how-to-turn-your-ipod-mini-into-a-fl ash-based-ipod.html

But he passed away in 2008 and I remember folks honoring him for this work:

Just FYI..Thanks for all:)
