When choosing Other as the activity type within the Workout app, Apple Watch will rely on your heart rate (as measured by the built-in heart rate sensor) to estimate your active energy / calories.
Outdoor Run would also use the built-in accelerometer to estimate distance.

Jan 3, 2016 5:42 PM in response to Jonathan UKby RWill9584,That helps! So when they say they are using "a brisk walk" calorie burn they are just saying that they use that as the baseline? If you go above and beyond a brisk walk they will raise the calorie value.

Jan 4, 2016 2:58 AM in response to RWill9584by Jonathan UK,★HelpfulWhen you choose Other as the activity type in the Workout app, calories are credited during the workout at a rate that is either equivalent to a brisk walk or at a rate that is determined by data from the sensors, whichever is higher.
One Exercise minute is also credited for each minute of the recorded workout.
