Jan 4, 2016 4:19 AM in response to arthurby Sebastian Kuhn,Thanks - the instructions are clear. Of course, it's what I was afraid of - lots of work to restore all files that I altered SINCE upgrading to El Capitan (I really tried hard to make it work for a couple of months, but the problems just keep piling up). For an alternative, if I have an older "startup disk image" (USB stick), could I use that to go back to an older OS WITHOUT losing any work I've done since the upgrade?

Jan 4, 2016 5:19 AM in response to Sebastian Kuhnby JimmyCMPIT,If you have a time machine backup of an instance where your computer was running 10.9 and performance was optimal you can use that backup to restore to the that point in time. You could possibly install OS 10.9 on another partition or another drive but launching an OS from a USB flash drive may introduce serious performance issues as the throughput of those devices can be dramatically slower than a mechanical hard drive.

Since your system is designed to take advantage of OS 10.11 it may be something your running is causing an issue.
