Jan 4, 2016 12:47 AM in response to erictyby léonie,Photos will work, if you do not keep the iPhoto Library around, but the second library does not need much extra storage, even if it is showing 26GB of size. all images inside the new Photos library have been created as hard links to the images in the iPhoto Library. They are sharing the storage with the iPhoto Library. So deleting the iPhoto Library will not free much storage. See this support document: Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
There are at least two reasons you might want to keep iPhoto and the iPhoto Library for a while: Don't burn your bridges in a hurry:
- Trouble shooting: One big problem is, that you cannot be sure that the migration to Photos went well, until you have inspected each and every photo. Photos is showing you the thumbnails in the browser, and they may be looking o.k., even if original files are missing or the database has a corruption, so missing or corrupted photos may go undetected for a long time. If the original iPhoto library had glitches, you may need to rebuild or repair the library in iPhoto, before trying to migrate it again to Photos. It might even be necessary to restore an earlier version of the library from a backup and repair it in iPhoto before you can migrate it to Photos.
- Missing features in Photos: iPhoto has better batch processing, and the projects (books, cards, calendars) cannot be migrated losslessly and need to be finished in iPhoto. Photos does not have the "Matte" effect and you cannot use the BorderFX plug-in or external editors, only dedicated editing extensions. Photos does not show the filenames as titles, so you may want to open the original iPhoto Library in iPhoto and the new Photos Library in Photos and compare them side-by-side.
At least keep a backup copy of the iPhoto Library and the iPhoto application on an external drive before you delete them, for it is hard to get the iPhoto application back.
