If you restarted your computer, and the Apple > About this mac menu still shows OS X Yosemite, then it appears the El Capitan download or installation was incomplete. Take a look at the Applications folder. Do you see the Install OS X El Capitan file? It should be around 6 GB in size. Double-click on the file to initiate the installation again.
If you don't see the Install OS X El Capitan file, open the Mac App Store application and click on the Updates tab. You should be able to re-download the application from the Update or Purchases tab.
Please reply to this thread and let us know if you are still unable to update and install OS X El Capitan.
Take care,

Jan 7, 2016 11:25 AM in response to samzafergby judysings,Hi samzaferg,
Thanks for the update. At this point, I would suggest you contact one of our technical support advisors. They have the tools to work with you one-on-one and share your computer screen remotely so that they can investigate further into this. If you live near an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service provider, they can do this with you in person. Click on the link above to initiate that support, and refer the advisor to this thread to review the steps you've already taken.
Take care,

Jan 21, 2016 6:24 PM in response to judysingsby Griverajr,I'm having the same problem. I did what mentioned above in applications folder and nothing. I took app and put it in the trash and emptied it. I'm gonna restart computer and try again with the download. If that doesn't help then it's off to the apple store this weekend.

Jan 22, 2016 4:38 AM in response to samzafergby Bebbs,I had the same problem.
My solution was to look for a link to El Capitan elsewhere.
I had gone to App Store and the Updates tab, downlaoded updates, restarted, then clicked the download button on the big El Capitan splash panel at the top of the Updates tab. I paused the download when I ran out of time to download. When I can to restart the download, the Resume button seemed dead. So I went to the App store's Featured tab and found El Capitan in the Quick links column on the right - the icon for El Capitan was smaller, the Resume button functioned and it downloaded.
