I use the AirPort Extreme as my wifi router, need an external hard drive, looked for the Time Capsule but can only find refurbished on Amazon. Is it not sold any longer by Apple? Will a refurb work with El Capitan? Thanks for replies.

Apple still sell Time Capsule.. just check the apple store.
Any model TC will work with El Capitan. Refurbished for a TC may not be a great idea though.
If you buy do get from Apple so you can return with the full warranty. Some of the faults are hidden and I doubt Apple is checking for them.. eg failure to work with certain modems.
Thanks for reply. This link shows what I was looking at, it is a unit that is not integrated into the AirPort, looks like it is not sold by Apple any longer?
Has not been sold by Apple for well over 2 years. It was discontinued in June 2013
And, for what it is worth, this product was an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive.
Does Apple still offer the Time Capsule or is it now built in to the AirPort?
