Jan 5, 2016 8:53 AM in response to mojodaddyby Eric Root,Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

The native application is named iChat.app in older OS X releases, and it's now known as Messages.app in more recent OS X releases.
The iChat.app / Messages.app application has been part of OS X for many years, and the app is located in the Applications folder.
Here's a general intro to OS X, and here's the Messages.app info.
