Hello Louis,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I see you're trying to connect your iPhone using CarPlay with your car's stereo system. First and foremost, please check with the manufacturer of the stereo system, whether it be the stock one from BMW, or a 3rd party product, to ensure it is capable of CarPlay. If you're using the stock stereo that came in your 2009 BMW, then it likely isn't compatible with CarPlay.

To use CarPlay, you need an iPhone 5 or later with iOS 7.1 or later. Some features (like turn-by-turn navigation) aren't available in all regions. Learn more about CarPlay.

  1. Check with the manufacturer to make sure that your car stereo works with CarPlay.
  2. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Siri and make sure that Siri is turned on.
  3. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on the car you have, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  4. Connect your iPhone to a different CarPlay USB port (if you have one).
  5. Try a different Lightning cable.
  6. Update your iPhone.
  7. Install any firmware updates for your CarPlay stereo.
