I like seamless upgrades. Any downside here?

Safari is the application that comes with OS X. In order to get newest version you should upgrade your operating system.

No, for you Snow Leopard (10.6) would be a downgrade if you are using Lion (10.7).

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite/El Capitan.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher

    Your Mac needs:

OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed

2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)

8 GB or more of available space

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

    El Capitan 10.11 Compatibility information

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

    Thanks thunderzzz and Eric.

So, i have iMac model 10,1 with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) and 4 GB memory.

I do not see the available space listed.

My computer says I am updated. When i go to find safari updates, I only find one for Snow Leopard and it does not open.

When I logged onto my bank, they say i need to upgrade to Safari 5+.

How can I tell which version of Safari I actually have?

    Why can't I update?

    This should be simpler.

Maybe it is time to switch to google prime as my primary browser?

You are welcome. Go to Finder/View/Show Status Bar and the available disk space should be visible at the bottom of the Finder window. To find your version of Safari, go to the application, then Safari/About Safari. If you want to upgrade Safari, backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives. Then go to the App Store, sign in and download El Capitan. After El Capitan is installed, you should have the most current version of Safari (9.0.2).

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I was not sure about El Capitan. Will download it and then upgrade Safari.

You are welcome. When El Capitan is installed, Safari will be upgraded. Safari is now part of the OS.
