Q: iCloud Alias Address Sending to iCloud Address

This is odd:  something changed recently - right about the beginning of 2016 - with respect my iCloud.com Email address.  It seems to be something very specific, although I'm not yet sure how specific (still experimenting).

Both my mom and I have iCloud.com Email addresses...

  • Until ~beginning of 2016, we could send Email back and forth fine, but now her iCloud.com Email address can no longer receive Email from my iCloud.com Email address.
  • I, however, can still receive Email from her iCloud.com address.
  • As far as I can tell, I'm having no problems sending from and receiving from other non-iCloud.com Email addresses using my icloud.com address.  I can send and from to her old AT&T address, for example.
  • My iCloud.com Email is actually an alias for an older, less ideal me.com address, and I'm having no problems sending and receiving Email with my mom's iCloud address (or other addresses) using that original base address.
  • The problem appears to be limited to my mom's iCloud address receiving Email from my iCloud address, which again is an alias of my older me.com base address.
  • I don't yet know whether it's specifically limited to my mom's iCloud address receiving Email from my iCloud address;  I'll have to find somebody else with an iCloud address to see if I can send to them fine too.  Undoubtedly I can find such a  person at the local Apple Store, but haven't had a chance to try that yet.

Anybody seen anything like this before?

    Hi mr88cet,

I understand your issue at the moment is specific to you not being able to send from your @icloud.com alias email to your mother.  The resource below is a good starting point.  Make sure that your email address is not being blocked for some reason on your Mom's computer.  You could also try removing your contact information from your Mom's computer or device, and re-adding the information with only the @icloud.com address.  Then send a test mail and see if she receives it.

I've highlighted the key information from the iCloud resource.  Click on the link for complete details.

    Get help using iCloud Mail

If you receive an alert when you send a message from your @icloud.com email address using Mail on your Mac

“This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. The reason for the failure is: An error occurred while delivering this message via the smtp server: server name.”

    1. Open Mail and choose Mail > Preferences.
    2. Click the Accounts tab.
    3. Select your iCloud account.
    4. Click the Account Information tab.
    5. Choose your iCloud account from the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) menu. If you choose Edit SMTP Server List, you won't see your iCloud SMTP server as an option.

If your recipient doesn't receive your message

    1. If an “unknown address” or “undelivered mail returned” message appears in your Inbox after you send a message, go to your Sent mailbox and make sure that the recipient's email address is correct.
    2. If you're using OS X Mail or accessing your iCloud Mail using Safari or another supported web browser, check your Drafts, Sent, and Outbox mailboxes:

      • If you see an unsent copy of the message in Drafts, try to send it again.
      •
      • If you see the message in your Outbox, make sure that you're connected to the Internet and use the steps above to select the iCloud SMTP server.
    3. Ask the recipient to check their Junk mail folders or mailboxes.
    4. If your recipient still doesn't receive your message, but your message was sent without any alerts or “undelivered mail” messages, your message might have been blocked or filtered by the iCloud Mail servers or the recipient's mail server. To find out, contact iCloud Support

First of all, sorry for the slow response; just starting a new job at ARM, so I'm "drinking from a firehose," so to speak.

    Second, thanks for the reply.

As it turns out, I had tried pretty much everything in that list of things to check (no reject messages, it's not stuck in my outbox, nor in my moms junk folder, and so forth.).

I finally got a chance to go to the local Apple Store, found somebody who also has an iCloud address, sent email to him, and he did in fact receive it.  So, it appears to be extremely specific – limited to sending from my iCloud Email alias specifically to my mom's iCloud address.   Apparently, the iCloud server suddenly decided, around 1/1/2016, to block that one particular … path ... of Email, as suggested at the end of the tech note you quoted.

I'll probably do a call with Apple, via getsupport.apple.com, to try to figure it out.

(Aargh, I intended to mark your message as helpful, but inadvertently marked my reply as helpful.  Can't seem to change that after the fact.  Sorry...)

    Hi mr88cet,

I'm glad you were able to isolate the issue to the specific email exchange with your Mom.  Hopefully the Genius at your local Apple Store, or one of our online technical advisors can delve into this a little further for you.

    Happy New Year!
