Q: Watch Doesn't Register Standing Very Well

Overall I like the Apple Watch, but it does a really poor job of noting when I'm standing. I've reported this before, and I even took the Watch to an Apple Store to have them make sure there was no hardware problem.

It's not just that it doesn't understand that I'm at a standing workstation most of the day; that I can accept. But even when I'm moving around, like making a salad, for example, it just doesn't grasp the fact that I'm on my feet.

So I made a little video to demonstrate the problem.

    Hi

The hourly Stand goal is achieved when you stand up and move around for at least one minute during that hour.

Apple Watch uses an accelerometer to identify movement, so a minute's walk around with your arms swinging naturally will achieve this.

Thanks for the reply. It's fairly typical of the replies I get from others. Did you actually watch the video where I demonstrate that even walking around making a salad for ten minutes doesn't register?

    Try these steps:

On your iPhone in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > General > Wrist Detection - check that this is turned on.

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Privacy > Motion & Fitness - turn Fitness Tracking off (or on, if it is currently turned off).

Restart both devices by turning both off together first, then restarting your iPhone before restarting your watch:

    - To turn your iPhone off: press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears; drag it to turn off. To restart, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button.

    - To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag it to turn off. To turn it back on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

If you turned Fitness Tracking off in step 2, now return to the setting and re-enable it.

It may also help to reset calibration data and re-calibrate your watch:

    - On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Privacy > Motion & Fitness > tap on Reset Calibration Data
