Q: Trying to update to from Yosemite to El Capitan and it says it cannot be installed on Macintosh HD

Can I update the Yosemite 10.10.5 to the new El Capitan. I am new to Mac...since January 2, 2016. Needs some pointers!

Yes you can as long as your Mac meets the El Capitan system requirements.

What happens when you try to download it from the App Store?

You can also try the download in the Safe Mode or in another admin account.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

It let me do it...not sure what was the problem. I closed the program and opened it back up and it let orocedd with the process.

Thanks for the help.

Any advice on a website to help learn about the Mac?
