iPod Classic appears to be playing but no sound is being received through earphones or car adapter. Reset the iPod as suggested on this site but still on success. Any ideas at all ...?

If you tried more than one headphones (or headphones and car adapter in this case) and there is no sound, there is probably no output coming from the headphones jack. You can try doing a Restore on the iPod using iTunes, in case the cause is software corruption on iPod. The Restore button is on the iPod's Summary settings screen in iTunes. This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.
If the problem is not resolved, the most likely cause is a faulty headphones jack on iPod (or other hardware problem on iPod related to sound output).
