Samsung SE-506 Blu-ray Writer no longer mounts after El Capitan upgrade

Hello all,

MBP, early 2008, El Capitan 10.11.2.....

My Samsung Portable Blu-ray Writer, SE-506CB/RSBD no longer mounts after I upgraded to El Capitan last week. The drive itself is only a few months old.

The problem is not the USB ports as other devices work fine using all of the USB ports on my MBP.

Note that I am NOT trying to read or write a Blu-ray disc. I'm only trying to read some audio CDs, which I was able to do successfully prior to upgrading to El Capitan.

Has anyone had this problem?

Thank you....

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), early 2008

For what it is worth, I have this problem as well. The drive tray wouldn't even eject with one cable, so I flipped to another. I could then open the tray (seems odd to me) but the disc would not mount. Here is the console log info that indicates that the OS is getting incorrect feedback from the driver saying the disc is faulty. This same reader/cable/disc work fine on my 10.10.5 MacBook Air and had worked perfectly fine with this same MBP prior to service (and "complimentary" upgrade to EC by Apple).

The drive works perfectly fine with this disc on 10.10.

I found the solution. See the web page in the link below:

Read carefully for background information. Some of the suggestions don't work for El Capitan. However, here is a sequence of steps that did work for me:

1. Restart your Mac in recovery mode (hit and hold Cmd-R while booting).

2. Start a terminal window (shell window). The user login in the shell will be "root" ("#" prompt).

3. Type this command:

nvram boot-args="mbasd=1

4. Exit recovery mode and restart normally.

5. Your SuperDrive should now work.

For what it is worth, the link you give should be as below (yours has an illegal character), but the site EXPLICITLY indicates that the mod you suggest is quote: "NO LONGER RECOMMENDED FOR EL CAPITAN". There is no further explanation, does anyone else have an idea? I opened a bug report.

Hi Jim,

Actually, I made a mistake. My apologies...!!!

The post I made in this thread was related to making the Apple SuperDrive work on older Mac's. I have an early 2008 MBP. It runs El Capitan just fine. But El Capitan puts some guards in the OS that prohibits Apple's own SuperDrive from working, purportedly because the newer drives require more power via USB which older notebooks don't provide. While not recommended -- and thus not supported by the OS -- my SuperDrive is working just fine with no apparent ill effects on the operation of my MBP in general. There is enough power, albeit perhaps not enough to maintain the safety margins stipulated in the design.

I never got the Samsung drive to work. In my frustration, I just went out and bought an Apple SuperDrive. I still have no solution to making the Samsung SE-506CB drive work. I imagine it's a driver problem in El Capitan.

Sorry for the confusion. I had posted another thread asking how to get the Apple SuperDrive to work given my problems with that drive too. I added the wrong comment to the wrong thread.
