Adding a phone number to my Ipad

I have an ipad mini 3, but an android phone. Is it possible to add my phone number to the contact information in my Apple ID so I can receive Imessages on my Ipad when someone texts me? Or do I need a Iphone to do that?

Also, when a friend set up a group chat on her Iphone and added my email (which is what my apple ID is), the messages came to my imessages on my ipad. But when another friend did it, the texts didn't show up on my Ipad imessages. Why is this??

Thanks! Sorry if this is confusing (I'm mostly an android user)

You can't use your Android phone number to receive or send iMessages on your iPad. You can send and receive iMessages directly using email address(es), only when the other end is an iOS device. Likewise, you can't forward SMS/MMS text messages from your android phone to an iPad, as you could with an iPhone.
