Maybe the second person put them through as text messages vs iMessage. I don't know for sure though.

You can send and receive iMessages directly using email address(es), only when the other end is an iOS device. Likewise, you can't forward SMS/MMS text messages from your android phone to an iPad, as you could with an iPhone.
