I have a late 2008 Macbook. The battery was replaced once. The current cycle count is 814. The recommended count is 300. Did the cycle count reset to zero when the battery was replaces a few years ago, or is this cumulative? I don't remember the count when it was last replaced, but it was well over 300. And, is a new battery still available?

The cycle count is contained in the circuitry of the battery itself, a new battery will have 1 or 0 cycles. pple no longer carries the batteries but you can get a good one at OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple_laptop/batteries/MacBook_13_Unibody
Avoid cheap knockoffs like the ones sold pn auction sites.

If you install a new battery, the cycle count will start from the beginning. It is not cumulative.
If you battery has 814 cycles on it, I urge you to replace it. If it starts to expand, it can severely damage your Macbook.
I can recommend Nupower batteries from OWC or Anker batteries. Avoid the bargains on ebay and Amazon. There are too many problematic ones that will cost you more in the long run.
