Q: iMovie 9.0.9 will not allow edits

I am using an older iMac (8 g RAM, Mac OS 10.11.2). I use iMovie 9.0.9 to make videos for my students (DVDs and uploads to college network). Just a month ago, I had full functionality. Today I tried to create new projects from previously uploaded video. I could not put new video in existing or new projects, I could not edit older projects, and playback was spotty: some played OK and some would not play audio.

I would appreciate any ideas for a fix or diagnostic help. Failing that, any ideas for alternatives would be welcome.

thanks in advance.

I have an update. I was able to copy my Event Library to an external drive and opened it with another computer running 10.10.5. The problem persists: I cannot insert video into new projects and the event clips do not play video. This does not seem to be a problem with the OS, instead my video seems to have become corrupted. The strange thing is that, in late November, using the same video, I was able to create projects, export them as Quicktime video, and upload them to our college server.

I would appreciate any input into this problem.

    Thanks.
