Q: decrease size time machine backup

Hi, I'm trying to restore my macbook from a time machine backup . But it says that my hard drive is too small to restore too. My hard drive is 139 gigs and the time machine backup is 142 gigs..   I can restore to previous backups that I have that are smaller in size.. but I'm trying to use this one specifically..

Is it possible to decrease the size of the time machine backup ? I tried to delete files manually within "enter time machine" but the size still seems to be the same ??
