Is It Possible to Turn Off "Fit Width"

Is it not possible to turn off "Fit Width?" Any time I try to resize my window to fit the text, it resizes the text all by itself. I assume this is because the Fit Width option is turned on, but no matter how many times I click it, it stays checked, it stays on, and I can't find any options or settings to turn it off.

Ok. I am using Pages v5.6.1 on El Capitan 10.11.2. If I click Fit Width in the View : Zoom sub-menu, then other menu items such as Actual Size, or Zoom to Selection are grayed out. When I use the Toolbar Zoom button, I see Fit Width is checked. But, if I change that Zoom setting to anything (say 125%), then Fit Width is deselected, not only on the Zoom Toolbar menu, but on the View : Zoom panel too.

The following capture is Pages with the Format panel hidden, and the document window scaled down to its margins with a 125% zoom. Switching on Fit Width, or Fit Page from the Toolbar Zoom menu does not change what you see in the capture. I am using a 24 in monitor and I have another inch on the right-side of the Pages document window.

The only other option is "Fit Page" which zooms waaaaay out, fitting the entire page on the screen at once, it is basically a "Fit Height."

I don't want to choose any other option. I just want to turn it off.

Again you have several options:

Actual size which goes to 100% size

Fit Width which does what it says and fits the document to the width of the window and adjusts as you change the size of the window.

Fit Page which will fit the entire page into the window and adjusts as you change the size of the window.

There is also Zoom In and Out.

You keep choosing the very thing you say you don't want. Just select one of the others. The others are not Fit Width, simple as that. Any selected scaling from the Toolbar is also not Fit Width. If you choose Fit Width that is what you get. Which ever it is you have to choose some Zoom, you can't have none.

You need to tell us what version of Pages you are talking about and actually use the terms that Pages uses.

I am trying to follow what you are talking about.

When you hover over an option a Text hint pops up explaining what it does.

Where do you find "Fit Width"?

Do you mean "Justify text"? Nothing resizes text by dragging at containing objects.

Justified text is one of 4 alignment options:

Align Left, Centre, Right Align and Justified.

You just choose another option with the text selected.

Version 5.6.1

Menu Bar > View > Zoom > Fit Width

I'm only talking about the viewing settings of a document, not the actually settings of the document. By default they force you to view the margins of a document, but with a trackpad you can zoom in on the text to the size of your Pages window, so the window fits the text.

Without a trackpad, you have to go to View > Zoom > Zoom In/Out until you get the text to about the viewing size you want. Then I assumed you could just resize the Pages window to fit the text (basically cropping out the document margins so I have more room on screen for other windows/app). But when you do this, it scales the text down as you adjust the window size.

I assumed this was because I had the "Fit Width" setting checked on, but it won't turn off.

So I'm just asking if there is another settings window some where to turn this off?

Sometimes, the hosting software will show a latest reply by someone, the latest reply link is inoperable, and the latest reply content is not shown. That would explain why you could see it in your email, but not in the threads of your post. If you are signed out, the missing post will show, or at times, it requires another browser (e.g. Firefox 43.0.3) to see the post.

This is a nagging hosting software problem that continues to randomly haunt us.

I've notice a similar problem that I haven't been able to find any settings for (I can't even imagine what they would be called) but every time I minimize a document and then pull it up again, or hide Pages and then bring it up again, the document window resizes and reframes itself.

Any idea what that setting would be called or if there even are any settings to stop this?

When I save, or even minimalize a Pages document, the next time it is opened, or returns from the Dock, it is the same view as previous. There is no preference setting in the Pages application, or System Preferences to configure this behavior. It is in the application logic to always be self-aware, and continuously store the last layout/position data before it quits, or changes state (iconic, or application view). I am using Pages v5.6.1 on OS X 10.11.2.
