Q: My Macbook Pro, El Capitan will not recognise my 30gb ipod classic, but my work windows 7 laptop did!?

My 2010 Macbook pro running el capitan will not recognise my 30gb ipod classic, but my work Windows 7 laptop, once I installed iTunes did!? Great, I thought, I'll reset the iPod to FACTORY DEFAULTS and wipe it and I hoped my Mac would then see the ipod, but NO, not even appearing in Disk Manager. Have now tried 3 or poss 4 leads, one of which is a brand new 'genuine apple' one. This is really annoying. My iPhone 6 works fine, but I want the iPod for when I am running in the rain and to plug into the older stereo on the truck. There appears to be nothing wrong with the iPod itself, though it has had a battery replacement some time ago and has worked fine since. It has never synchronized with my Macbook. I have tried before El Capitan and several times since getting the laptop last year with Yosemite installed.

Obviously I have followed the Apple Support troubleshooting which basically in this instance achieves nothing. I have the latest version of iTunes, recently updated.

Can somebody PLEASE help!? I am obsessed and really want it to work. I love my iPod classic and was going to use it and get the case refurbished. It would appear that historically there have been a **** of a lot of issues like this, has everyone just given up and binned their iPod's in favor of their phones?

Any help would be appreciated. It is driving me mad and I am all Googled out.

Joe

Was one of the things you tried putting the iPod into Disk Mode?

Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support

Is "Disk Manager" the pre-install Disk Utility app?

If you put it into Disk Mode and connect it, it's acting like a plain USB storage device, so it should at least appear in Disk Utility.

I will try this, yes I was using disk manager the pre installed OS application on my Macbook but it didn't show. I will try putting it in Disk Mode but having read other threads doubt it will work. I will get back to you in the next day or so.

I'm having the same problem as well. I have the latest version of the iPod Classic 160GB (It's a little over a year old.) I was just upgraded to El Capitan on my Macbook Pro and now my iPod is no longer recognized. As soon as it connects, it immediately begins to eject before I have a chance to pull any music off of it. I also tried putting it into Disk Mode and it still won't recognize on my computer.

Well I have had mine on Windows 7 iTunes several times, tried back on Mac both in and out of disk mode, reformatted it FAT32, got it into recovery mode and my Mac still won't see it at all in any way shape or form. Is this simply built in obselescense? Or are Apple going to give us a fix!?

When it's in Disk Mode, and you connect it with iTunes NOT running, and run Disk Utility, does the iPod appear in the Disk Utility sidebar?

Also, when you connect it, what does the iPod's screen say or do?  Does it acknowledge being connected?

    HI Kenichi,

ON Win7 it works fine. On Mac, no matter what mode it is in or when I start iTunes it is invisible and simply charges over USB.

Maybe it's a way of getting us to pay for Cloud a Music so I have to Sync that way via Cloud? Call me cynical but Apple seem to have issues like this with any kit more than 2-3 years old all the time. Shame because it's great hardware and the OS is basically brilliant and has been since about '84!

PLEASE can we get a proper fix??

    You're not answering my question...

Maybe it's a way of getting us to pay for Cloud a Music so I have to Sync that way via Cloud? Call me cynical...

OK, you're cynical...  How would that work, since an iPod classic cannot access iCloud?  It has no Internet connection.  If you own an iPod classic, you should know that...  Besides, I have an "classic" iPod from 2003, and it works fine with the latest OS X and iTunes.

I think I did answer your question but to clarify, NO it is not recognised when plugged in in disk mode in the disk utility on the Mac when booted up without opening iTunes.

The iPod could be synchronized via the Windows laptop using iCloud.

It does not work, and although yours apparently does, there are a huge number of people who also seem to be having this problem.

I will try again tonight, just to be absolutely sure I've not made a mistake and confirm the above later.

Hi. I've tried it a few times (iPod in Disk Mode and connecting to the computer without iTunes being on) and it still doesn't work. Once my iPod plugged in, the icon showed up on the desktop for all of 2.3 seconds before it disappeared again and my iPod told me it was safe to disconnect.

So, it does appear momentarily, in Disk ModeAnd if you have Disk Utility already open when you connect it, does it appear in the Disk Utility sidebar (even if it's only briefly).

Are you using a direct connection to the MacBook's USB port (no USB hub)?  Do you happen to own a USB hub (preferably USB 2.0) that is self-powered (meaning it has its own power supply)?

The iPod shows up momentarily both in and out of Disk Mode on my computer. And it did the same thing when I had Disk Utility open as well. It actually seemed even quicker to disappear when I had Disk Utility open. As for my connection, it's a a direct connection. I do not have a USB hub. But I can probably get my hands on one if you think it's a necessary step. I'm kind of desperate at this point. I just want to be able to listen to my music while I'm working a million hours at my computer.

The USB hub would be a test, in case the MacBook is doing something odd, like not supply enough power to the iPod (to operate and charge its battery).  That may be why it appears briefly, but disappears (maybe when the iPod's battery starts charging).

If you can get a USB 2.0 hub that is self-powered, connect hub to MacBook and then connect iPod to hub.  Since the hub has its own power supply, the Mac's USB port is only being used for the data connection (not supplying power).  Then, the iPod may not disappear.

I'll hunt down a USB hub to try, as I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. However, I do doubt it's the power situation. I have tried three other Macs running El Capitan and they all had the same reaction (the icon disappears and iTunes doesn't recognize it.) And when I tried my iPod on an iMac running Yosemite, it immediately loaded and allowed me to play music from my iPod.
