Q: MD101LL/A + 2SSD + 16GB ram having hiccups

Hello ladies and gents!

Unfortunately my MacbookPro 13" mid-2012 last only two years without any problems. I was more than happy with the purchase and changing the system from Windows and was amazed with the reliability this computer can give You. When I was buying it I also bought 16GB of Kingston RAM and asked the Apple reseller to install it. Year later I bought the Samsung 850 PRO 128GB SSD and put second life into this machine. Everything was working fine, and by "working" I mean heavy usage of Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, InDesign and even Premiere also connected to second monitor.

After installing the Yosemite I started to have some minor problems with sudden reboots and so on, nothing special when You're used to Windows machines. Few months later I've started to have the problem with multicolour stripes across the screen which suggested the GPU or Motherboard problem. They showed only time to time, especially on heavy usage. Then I traveled to Iceland carrying my mac in the backpack as I used to do on other trips. For 10 days, when MacBook was not connected to secondary monitor, everything was fine. When I came back the problem started to occur more often to the point when I was not able to use the laptop anymore because it gave me only three annoying sounds and reboot. I found out that probably this is motherboard dying.

I sent the MacBook to the Apple reseller and they cleaned the motherboard from every kind of moisture or rust that it could have, they changed two cables, run all this fancy diagnostics and my laptop was like new again. Everything started to work. At least this is what I heard on the telephone. When I came to pick it up the consultant started showing me how it works and then BAM! Stripes across the screen again! You should see his face!

It turned out that when he holds the laptop by one hand pressing the left side of the touchpad the glitches show! Conclusion: problem with the memory. The bottom slot to be exact. Upper was fine, no matter which sticks of RAM we used. Bottom was always a failure. So I've been left with only 8GB of RAM and upgrade of another SSD instead of the Cd-ROM - Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD.

This setup has been working quite fine BUT from time to time it showed some kind of hiccups which now are my everyday problem...

Please check the video below and tell me what the **** is going on again?

Lack of RAM is hurting your performance based on the number of swaps.  Have you determined that the one RAM slot is faulty or perhaps one RAM module was/is the problem.

Check to see if you have kernel panics in you Library.  If so, use these instructions to log and post one:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

    Ciao.

Thank You OGELTHORPE for the reply.

How is it possible that 8GB of RAM could be not enough for using only the Chrome?... I don't understand it. They sell this laptop with 8GB of RAM max. Do You remember the times we had 128MB of RAM and 1GB was like a dream? Ofc, I'm aware of the fact that today's browsers use and do much more, but still... 8GB of RAM? Not enough for browsing the internet?

Here's another EtreCheck after another panic. The problem is that I can't find the panic report even if I see the kernel panic...

Your still getting RAM swaps, though not the massive amount as shown on the first report.

I note that you have installed Avira AV.  I recommend that you rid the MBP of it.  It is not necessary and can corrupt your system.

It looks like the last crash was due to a PenTabletDriver.  Can you disengage that?

Google Chrome is a resource glutton among browsers.  I use Firefox, Safari and Opera.

I note that you have both Paragon and Tuxera installed.  I wonder if having both creates any conflict?  I use neither, just a speculative thought on my part.

Stating the obvious, the MBP is designed to run with two RAM modules.  Having only one installed, the MBP will suffer a performance decrease,  Two 4 GB RAM modules would perform better than one 8 GB RAM module.  This is a handicap you have to accept.

    Ciao.

Thank You one more time for another reply Ogelthorpe!

First of all - this is the state after restarting the ystem so it's kinda hilarious that there's not enough RAM to just start my workflow.

Second of all - I installed Avira after all these years hearing that macs can't be infected. As Avira showed, they can. As every other system based on any programming language. I am aware of the fact that antiviruses install their own viruses and malwares to then find them and make them look more reliable but... but... ok, I'll uninstall it.

I can't disable the PenTabletDrive unfortunately because this is the process that's responsible for my Wacom tablet and I can't work without it.

Thank You for the advice of Chrome because I chosed it after reading all these reviews about it being the least heavy for the system... :/

About Paragon, Tuxera etc - I'd used them but I don't anymore so I can uninstall them also.

Starting the obvious - this wasn't the obvious. NOONE EVER told me about it. No review of this laptop, nor case on Apple Communities showed me this. No guy at Apple store. They told me to just use it with one ram module like it would be original setup out of the box...

Do You want to tell me there's no cure for that kind of problems when one of my RAM modules is broken?

About six-seven years ago, I installed an AV application and after about six months with nothing to show for it I deleted it.  I experienced no detected problems which may be due to any virus' since then.  I did have a glitch with some adware a short while back, but I ran Malwarebytes anti Malware for Mac and that took care of the problem very quickly.  I can recommend that application.  It will run only when you initiate it and not in the background so it essentially has no adverse effect on your MBPs performance.  Also it will not remove anything, it just identifies candidates for removal (all of which have been tested for) and you the user has to make the decision. It also is being constantly updated to reflect the changing scene regarding adware and malware.  Its author is probably the most knowledgeable expert on virus' and malware on Macs on these forums..  (Thomas Reed)

    https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

A Mac will work with only one RAM module installed, but that in effect is a 'mismatched set'.  The OSX is designed to work best with a matched pair so you do take a performance decrease in the neighborhood of 10%-15%.

    Ciao.

OGELTHORPE, definitely removed AVIRA after this read. Also removed Paragon, Tuxera etc. Actually I made new admin account and this resolved my issues with JAVA for example but unfortunately not with the RAMs which is obvious.

I understand the fact that my mac's performance will be worse right now because of the mismatched set BUT, still, after removing the Chrome and started using Safari I'm very disappointed. Let's be honest: Safari can NOT use THAT amount of RAM, especially if the htmldog.com is a website which I opened 1 day ago and forgot about it. Also htmldog.com is designed to be clutter-less:

    WHAT THE ****?!

I've just detached my second monitor and started using my laptop in different place (different Wi-Fi) and everything is working SUPER FAST!!!

Is is possible that the connector between monitor and laptop is causing those issues?

Tested. After connecting another monitor everything gets definitely slower, mostly animations and websites loading. For example this one: http://www.apple.com/start-something-new/ on the single laptop monitor works flawlessly while when connected to my DELL U2412M gets hiccups. Also when I type a phrase to the adress bar and wait for Google to find it I can see that the process of finding is done but page loads slower.

This behaviour is kinda strange because it started to occur after cleaning my mac by the Apple reseller.

Could it be still the RAM problem or more of a graphic card?

Ok, I'm still not satisfied with the idea of having hiccup because of the mismatched RAM set. I did a FRESH install of El Capitan (totally wiped the drives and did the install), installed only the apps for work (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom) plus Spotify, Pocket, Evernote and just installed Nylas N1 (open source mail client). Everything was super fine until I opened literally 30 tabs on Safari. Then I've started having problems opening apps and restarting the OS X took ages. I had to hard reset the laptop because when it restarted, there was no mouse on login screen so I could not log in. How the F* is it possible that Safari is using THIS AMOUNT OF RAM??? This is what Etre shows me:

Not to threadjack, but I've noticed some of you are using TRIM with your Samsung 850 Pro drives. Is this now safe to do? I've read a lot of conflicting information regarding data corruption. I believe my firmware is up to date (EXM02B6Q)

The issue you're having is with your board.  It is not related to any software you're using.  The specific boards that Apple manufactured for the mid 2012 13" units have traces that connect to the RAM pins in the bottom DIMM that crack and cross.  I have personally seen about 25 of these that have the same exact issue.
