No speakers recognized

A couple of months ago the sound just stopped working on my desktop. I did a search for them and they are nowhere to be found on this computer. Not sure what happened but I did update to the El Capitan operating system this morning hoping they would reappear but nothing. My calendar also started deleting events and taking forever to update when you changed an event. Any suggestions?
