best USB hubs?

I notice El Capitan doesn't have any more USB ports than my old IMac. Is it better to have a USB hub than to keep unplugging one appliance and plugging in another one? If so, does anyone recommend one company or design of hub over another? Sabrent? Jiafeng? Anker? Insignia? Belkin? J5? Insignia? Is there an advantage to having switched ports? I notice Amazon customers find fault with several makes, find they're unreliable.

I just need 3 more ports.
