Q: Problems with updating to 10.5.8 from 10.5 on Quad core G5

Just purchased a used-in mint condition G5 2.5HHz Quad core Power Mac (pre-Intel) late model, liquid cooled with 8GB ram and two 500GB hard drives. Needed this for specific reasons running sign software and plotters that are no longer updated. Had a Dual core G5 version with less ram and HD previously that died. The previous version had OS 10.5.8.

On the Quad machine the HD were wiped clean with original OS10.4 installed. Need to bring this up to 10.5.8. Installed from a Leopard Disc (startup) 10.5 by erasing previous OS — Clean Install. At first it wasn't working very well, getting a gray curtain coming down. Managed to get past that and can install 10.5 and get everything to work (only tried installed OS applications so far, no other software installed). But every time I try to install the Combo update 10.5.8 which I have downloaded from the Apple website several times in several forms, it will freeze up during the install and I get a screen with a bunch of code line language in black and white over the install window. No peripherals attached other than a new 27" Dell monitor with monitor connection adaptor, and the keyboard and mouse. I have tried starting from the beginning, reinstalling 10.5 on, about 15 times. 10.5.8 Freezes every time. I turned off airport and bluetooth after 10.5 is installed and play around with 10.5 for awhile to make sure everything is working. Then try the combo 10.5.8 update again and again with the same freeze every time.  I then ran a disk diagnostic with DiskWarrior V.4 which covers this OS version. I run that test with OS10.5 before the update to make sure all is well before installing 10.5.8. Even the disk check freezes up. The screen goes darker like a dropping shade from above with a failed message. The same thing happens sometimes when trying to install 10.5.8. Can this Mac accept 10.5.8 or not. All the material I have read says it should be able to. The last version that will work on a Power PC. And this Mac is three years newer than the one that just died, and that had 10.5.8 on it with no problem. Has anyone experienced this? What should I be looking at? Can't run diagnostics without failing part way through the test. Could the Combo 10.5.8 update be bad or corrupted?

Thanks for any help,

Perplexed

Yes, our G5 Quads can run 10.5.8 easily.

Open Console in Utilities & look for crash reports or system log at the date & time of the crash & upto the next restart.

Even the disk check freezes up.

Is that DW, or Disk Utility???

Yes, my older G5 also ran 10.5.8. But it was not a quad core or liquid cooled. I can install 10.5 but not the combo update to 10.5.8. It will freeze up and give me a bunch of command line text. Which means nothing to me. I'm not a programer.

There will not be any crash reports to look up. I'm installing 10.5 clean, erasing anything left on the HD. Which is only the OS 10.5. After trying to install 10.5.8 and after the crash, it will not restart successfully. So I cannot look up anything. I must restart from the 10.5 install disk. Then reinstall it again in order to boot up again, after the install. But that erases any crash logs. Even if I could look up the crash report, I probably wouldn't know what it means. They are rather cryptic to non IT people.

I was using Disk Warrior v.4. It said the HD was fine and I could a do couple of minor checks, but once I ran the full file evaluation it would freeze up, just like like it does when installing the 10.5.8 from the Super drive. Disk Warrior was also starting form the disk. The only files on the drove were the OS 10.5 files.

We apparently have some HW error, possibly a bad sector on the HDD.

      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*

       3. Click the Erase tab.

       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.

       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.

       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase, one pass... after completion hopefully you'll be able to get a good install.
