Q: iphoto clearout not resulting in more space

I am trying to free some space on my 13-inch Mac Book Pro mid-2014 laptop.

I moved 4000 photos and videos out of iPhoto and onto a hard drive. Despite clearing out the iphoto trash, and the trash can on my laptop I have LESS SPACE than then I started. I had 1.48 GB free before deleting the photos, and after deleting I have been left with 944 MB.

I have searched the laptop for files deleted and they only appear in my iCloud drive - nothing on my actual laptop.

Can someone help with this?

Am I correct is assuming you also have a Photos library in addition to your iPhoto library? Then you should read these two articles about how they use hard links:
