Q: If I restore from a previous backup, how can I restore to a more recent backup?

Unaware of this solution, I backed up my phone from a previous backup. Having done that and updated the ios, is the more recent backup gone?

You really can't backup your phone from backup, so please do not make me guess, but try to explain what happened using correct terminology.

If you asking if the recent backup is gone, why would it be if you did create and didn't delete it?

Ahh, apologies for using incorrect terminology.  Was a late and frustrating evening.

    My 6s died suddenly. I purchased a new 6s.

When setting up the new phone there were several backups to choose from. There was one from 1/6/2016 that was the logical choice, but since it was backed up with ios 9.2 the new 6s that hadn't been upgraded couldn't use it. Without being able to look up the solution of setting up as a new phone--upgrading--wiping--then selecting the 1/6/16 backup, I chose to use an older backup from 11/1/15.

I restored from that 11/1/15 backup. Once complete I upgraded the ios to 9.2.  Wiped the phone. But now when looking at available backups, the 1/6/16 backup is gone. All that remains are backups from 11/1/15 and earlier.

My question is where did the 1/6/16 backup go? Is there a way to find it?

    Thanks.

No, backup if it was available still should be there, make sure you really updated to 9.2, I have seen it before that update downloaded, but not actually installed.

You may have to get back in to the phone (setup as new) to verify the 9.2 in settings - general about.

If you do verify that and if you do not see the backup from 1.6.2016 in settings - storage - manage storage then I would say that backup never existed rather, then it is just gone. Good luck and if you think backup did exist and it is still not there try to back track your steps - like when was the last time you saw the backup. How did you make sure it was completed and so on.
