Q: locked iphone after appled id change

Hi,

I've purchased iphone 5s for m wife who was using iphone 4 before, so as expected I backed up her old phone and restored it on new purchased device and here were the problems began.

Her old phone was logged in  icloud with apple id that was changed during the period of device usage. Now the change went well (at least I thought so). After I've restored her phone on new device I've realized that on iCloud it's still using her old apple id. Now the reasong I've changed her apple id is that the previous email provider has changed it's email domain and closed the old one.

Now, I can't change the new apple id on newly purchased device nor I can logut since it request password for this non existing apple id, your company provided poor workaround for this issue to change back for old apple id temporary, but this can't be done since it sends verification code to conform the change to non existing email domain.

So currently the situation is as follows:

I have purchased new iphone which basically is locked since it request me to login to non existing apple id and prevent me from backup/restore/any other icloud features like findmyiphone.

This issue is caused due apple design bug in change apple id flow. I myself don't believe that as a customer who paid for this purchase should be punished like this.

The support didn't provide me any solution at all.

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.2

    Greetings pavellom,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you have an iPhone that is signed into an iCloud with an email account that no longer exists and you are having trouble getting signed out of it and signed into the correct account. We know that issues with usernames and passwords can be frustrating, but we are here to help!

To begin, you are on the correct path. You would need to edit the current Apple ID back to the previous Apple ID to sign out. There is no need to verify the old account when you edit the Apple ID. Simply change the Apple ID to the old email address and sign out of iCloud on the iPhone as the following article describes. The only time you will need to verify the email address is when you have the correct account set up for your Apple ID. This is described in step 6 from the following article.

    Change your Apple ID temporarily

Use these steps to change your Apple ID temporarily:

    1. Sign in to your Apple ID account page.
    2. Click Edit in the Account section, then click Change Email Address.
    3. Change your Apple ID to the email address that iCloud is asking you to sign in with.
    4. Sign out of your account page.

Then sign out of iCloud on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

    1. Tap Settings > iCloud on your iOS device.
    2. Scroll down and tap Sign Out, then tap Sign Out to confirm. If you're using iOS 7 or earlier, tap Delete Account, then tap Delete to confirm.
    3. Tap Keep on My [Device] or Delete from My [Device], and enter the password for your Apple ID. Your data remains in iCloud, and it will be updated on your device when you sign in to iCloud again.
    4. If you're signed in on more than one device with this Apple ID, repeat steps 1-3 on each device.
    5. Go to your Apple ID account page, and sign in again.
    6. Change your Apple ID to the email address that you want to use. You'll need to verify the email address.
    7. Tap Settings > iCloud on your iOS device, and sign in with your new Apple ID.

If these steps don’t work, change your Apple ID temporarily again. Then sign back in to your Apple ID account page to make sure that your Apple ID was changed.

    Have a great day!

    HI Joe,

I'm familiar with that flow, is that when I try to change my apple id

to the old one IT DOES require me to verify it which isn't

possible since the old apple id is closed domain email

which I don't have access to.

    Thanks,

    Pavel

    Hi again pavellom,

Thanks for replying back with this information. You shouldn’t need to verify the Apple ID to temporarily change it, but because you do in fact need to verify it, I would suggest contacting AppleCare directly for further assistance. Contacting Apple Care will allow us to look at your accounts in further detail and help you get this situation resolved.
