Duplicate iTunes confusion

Somehow, I have managed to duplicate almost a thousand iTunes. I have read how to remove multiple duplicates easily but the "date added" is not apply to this. What I have with each duplicate is one that has no icon and the other has the iCloud "download" icon (cloud with arrow pointing downward). I'm afraid to delete anything at this point, fearing a loss of one kind of another for the songs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.thanks!

Information.

Itunes has duplicated some songs from albums that have been there for years

I think I figured out the problem. Sometime this fall, I backed up my iPhone to my laptop and not iCloud. I'm pretty sure that is what caused all the duplicates. Now, a quick question. After backing up iTunes, I would like to take all my songs/playlists, put them on a separate drive and delete them from my MacBook Air. Does that make sense? Will it work? Am I playing with fire? LOL!

Yes, you can move your iTunes folder to an external drive. After moving, go to iTunes/Preferences/Advanced to reset where the iTunes folder is located.

Eric, you are certainly, for me, the "Go To" guy for AD. Now if you will just give me your personal 24 hour cell number, your home/work number, your personal and work emails, we can really make this work...or not.
