Q: iPad 1 IOS 5.1.1 not offered compatible versions from App Store, simply downloads incompatible version and gives incompatible IOS version error. Anyone else seeing this?

Trying to make useful the old original iPad; Safari crashing too much. Trying to install compatible versions of Chrome, Opera or iCab. This iPad 1 IOS 5.1.1 is not offered compatible versions from App Store, it simply downloads incompatible version and gives incompatible IOS version error. Anyone else seeing this?

Fails both from App Store on iPad and iTunes on MacBook Pro with latest El Capitan version. Any ideas?

There just may not be a compatible version for the older iOS. If you are experiencing crashing with Safari, you may want to try restoring the iPad. That will load a clean copy of the iOS and related native applications such as Safari.
