Q: Final Cut Pro 7 and Sony DSR-45 not communicating, why?

This Mac Pro desktop is a 2 x2 2.6 quad core with 12 GB memory. My OS is 10.6.8 so that Final Cut Pro 7 is stable.  I have connected a Sony DSR-45.  It's been disconnected (uplugged) for awhile but now I have to access some video tape media.  I have the DSR connected via the DV cable in back to firewire in on the Mac (directly into the back of the Mac).  When I try log and capture, the dialogue box says the software is unable to initialize the HDV unit. I checked the 'more info' under about this mac, and then the firewire option, and the dsr shows up.  Oh, and the DSR is set to remote.

I have unplugged the DSR, tried two different cables, and restarted the Mac.

Any ideas why they aren't talking?

Thank you.

On the DSR-45 check the menu options and make sure the deck is not down converting the HDV to DV at the firewire port (what Sony calls iLink). If it is (and I think it may be the default setting) then the DSR is presenting itself to FCP as a DV deck and consequently FCP is not seeing the HDV deck it is looking for.

The DSR-45 is a DV deck...not HDV. It only plays standard definition DV tapes. HDV tapes will not work.  And if you have your Easy Setup set to HDV in FCP, it will look for an HDV deck.  Change the Easy Setup to DV/NTSC and it should recognize the deck.

But you can only capture DV tapes with it...not HDV. I think I said that.

Yes, you are right and I am wrong. The DSR-45 is DV/DVCAM.
