This happened once before and I Just opened up my library and entire albums are gone. Some are actually doubled and theres a ! next to the names and they won't play.

I brought up the fact that I'd already been told, both in writing and on the phone with lower-level Apple employees, "When Apple Music adds these matched songs to your iCloud Music Library, Apple Music doesn’t change or alter your original music files that reside in iTunes for Mac or PC or on your iOS devices from which they were added."

She still said what she said. I even asked, "but what about those dismissive forum posters who say, 'there's a document that says this doesn't happen, so that MUST be the truth?'" She just reiterated that my songs had, in fact, been deleted. And since they don't store WAV files, all WAV files are automatically converted to Mp3.

So I'm either lying about her saying she doesn't use Apple Music (not iTunes, just Apple Music), or she was lying to me? Why? What would the motivation for that be? Is it so hard to accept that there might be something you don't know, or haven't yet experienced?

There are now 123 gigs free on my laptop that were once occupied by music. A senior advisor at Apple told me this was true, and why it happened. I know where I kept the files. I was using Musicmatch Jukebox before iTunes even existed, so it's not like I've never stored a music file before.

But please, believe what you want. I wish you well and honestly hope you never have to go through this, even if it means forever not believing me.

James, any update on Apple Support? I came across this situation via the Bitperfect blog that linked to an article on the Vellum website.

This did not happen to me personally when I signed up for the Apple Music trial last year, so I am curious why this happens to some and not others. I have an iTunes Match subscription--and had it since before the Apple Music trial--and my music (a mixture of iTunes purchases, CD rips, and high-resolution music files) is served from an external hard drive. After my Apple Music trial ended and throughout using iTunes Match, my original files have remained untouched. I have had some minor issues related to metadata and album artwork, but these have not really been an inconvenience in the scheme of things.

Thanks for documenting this important information!

If you do what is prudent and maintain a backup of your original song files, you don't have to worry no matter what may or may not happens (real or imagined).  For example, if you're a Mac user, use the built-in Time Machine to back up not only your iTunes data, but ALL of your user data.
