Q: Sim card out of iphone, will i still get message via ipad

Hi,

I have to return my iphone 5 s as it has a fault. All my messages use to come through to my iPad and Mac computer but my mobile number is not showing as linked to messages on either anymore.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance

It's hard to tell what you mean when you say "messages."  You might mean:

    • iMessage, in which case those messages transmitted using your Apple ID will come to your iPad.
    • SMS text messages, in which case you cannot receive anything on the iPad until you have a working iPhone with a SIM card that is linked to your iPad using Handoff.

UPDATE: You reference a Mac in your question as well.  The Mac's behavior will be the same as the iPad's.

    Hi Sberman

Thanks for the quick reply but i thought imessage was text messaging. Thats what i use to text message everyone.

As i said my mobile number was linked to my ipad and i use to get every message to it but now i have taken sim out i'm not getting them.

    Regards

iMessage is an Apple proprietary messaging system. The Messages app on the iPhone handles iMessages, as well as SMS and MMS messages. When linked to an iPhone, the Messages app on an iPad or Mac can receive SMS and MMS messages via the phone. If the phone is not functioning, turned off, does not have a SIM, or is out of range, SMS and MMS messages will not be received on the iPad or Mac.They may be held in a queue for later delivery by your cellular carrier.

iMessage is not the same as text messaging.  iMessage only works to/from other Apple devices.  Text messaging works between cell phones.

Use Messages with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Basically when your SIM card is not in an iPhone, you have no iPhone to use for iMessaging, and the telephone number is "out of service".  So folks can send/receive iMessages to/from you if they use your Apple ID, and if you have set up your Apple ID to send/receive messages.

On the iPad, this would be done at Settings > Messages > Send & Receive (set up both sending and receiving there).

On the Mac, this would be done in the Messages app using the menu to go to Messages > Preferences > Accounts

Actually, the more common problem we find (on the iPad forum) is something like this:

"I have an iPad with cellular capability, yet it doesn't let me text message my friends with Android phones."

This cannot be done, as an iPad is not a cellular telephone.

No, your question is just fine.

    Enjoy your Apple gear.
