Q: Want to recover iTunes library from Time Capsule.

My iMac hard drive failed but fortunately I had everything backed up.  Now I want to move my iTunes Library to my MacBook Pro but cannot.  Have used migration assistant and also tried to access time capsule directly but cannot see anything from the iMac backup.  I see the back up is there but just cannot view any of files.  Does anyone have any ideas?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

So that included the itunes library?

Did you have it shared on the iTunes with MBP registered via the iCloud to share the content?? Permissions get a bit icky when you take an iTunes library and try and pick it up from another computer unless it is the same user with the same cloud account.

Have used migration assistant and also tried to access time capsule directly but cannot see anything from the iMac backup.

Did the migrated setup include the same user, name and password?? It can get messy as it could create another user on the computer and block permissions to see it.

If you tried and cannot see any files we need to work out how to get your permissions accessible again.

There is a couple of ways of doing that.. one is to archive the TC to a USB disk, then plug that disk into the MBP and change the permissions..

A better way might be to restore the OS to the iMac with the dead hard disk. Then you can export the library and use it much more easily.

If you still have it and it still works other than the dead hard disk.. plug a USB drive into it.. boot the mac to restore partition and do a full system recovery. Once you have the Mac with a work boot disk.. you can then get access to the drive and export.. or fix the permissions on the existing setup.. on or the other.
