Q: Need NAS Basics

My iTunes is currently on my iMac. I'd like to access my iTunes library from my iPad, iPhone, etc to listen via Sonos. If I store ITunes on a NAS connected to my LAN, does the NAS operate independently of my iMac?  I want to avoid having the iMac running 24/7 or needing to wake it up to get access to the music. Thanx in advance!

You can find information about this at the Sonos website. The basic answer is that yes, you can move your music library to a NAS and Sonos can access it even if your computer is not on. The trick is to select a NAS that is 100% compatible with Apple even when Apple upgrades its operating software. Since I have an Apple Extreme Base Station I simply attached a USB drive to the base and used that to store my music. The upside is Sonos could see my music all the time. The downside is that iTunes lagged even more than when the iTunes library was on the computer.
