Loser without iDVD

I’ve been trying to produce a slide show/movie (about 300 pictures) with music, using pictures from iPhoto and songs from iTunes, and then recording them on a CD-R to view on a DVD player. I haven't been able to do this with QuickTime 6, so that has lead me to probe into iDVD. However, I don't have it and want to know:
1. Can I accomplish what I need with iDVD, keeping in mind that I have OSX 10.2.8.?
2. If so, which version, and can I download it alone or do I have to purchase iLife? (I already have ieverything except for iDVD).
Thanks.

With your system you might want to look at: Ulead DVD PictureShow for Mac 1 at http://ulead-dvd-pictureshow-for-mac.ulead-systems-gmbh.qarchive.org/

It was a great product, designed for systems like yours, and seems to be now FREE!

I've used it in the past when Ulead sold it. Ulead used to make a little Mac software but it appears they no longer support or sell it.

It's FREE! Don't 'look a gift horse in the mouth'.

It will let you create a video CD (MPG-1) compresson that will playback in most DVD players. This is the only form of compression you can put on a CD and expect it to play back in a DVD player. The quality isn't as good as MPG-2 on a DVD, but let me say it again: "It's FREE! Don't 'look a gift horse in the mouth'".

With QuickTime Pro you can easily merge two (or more) songs.

You know, I'd follow Mr. Shippey's advice here!

But, you can workaround the music problem by burning your songs on an Audio CD (not data or mp3) and re-import them to iTunes.
Choose 'Join CD Tracks' from the Advanced menu in the menu bar and iTunes will combine all of the songs from the CD into one song.
Plus, I hope you mean DVD, not CD.

Thanks Shippey and Sue. My old clunker has a dvd player, & only burns cds (at least that's all I've burned on it). Ok, no more peeking into the horse's mouth. But before I try ULead, if I do the transfer trick for the music instead, I just want to make sure it will work and be able to be viewed on a dvd player... I'm thinking I will drag and drop the final slideshow onto a cd and burn it? Right?

Wrong.

For the CD to be playable in a DVD player it must be encoded. DVDs are MPG-2 encoded. Video CDs - which you will make - are MPG-1 encoded. Most - but not all - DVD players will play Video CDs.

Ulead PictureShow for Mac will let you create and write your slideshow to a CD. No drag-and-drop - no other programs need. Just PictureShow.

Hi,
Well, this link as well as every other Ulead PictureShow "free" download I could find, did not work or gave me "unable to open file" error msg. I guess the horse is not free after all?... Any other suggestions??? Or why I might not be able to download? I've already checked my internet preferences and couldn't find any block.

Sorry about the bad URL. I guess I forgot: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I've been searching the Internet trying to find something else that is low cost/free.

You might want to look at VCD Builder at http://homepage.mac.com/johan/files/category-4.html It might work for you.

You might also try emailing Ulead (contact info on website at ulead.com) asking for help in obtaining the Mac version of DVD PictureShow.

Roxio's Toast Titanium comes with slideshow software and can create VCDs. The current version - Toast Titanium 7 -requires QuickTime 7. I'm not sure Toast Titanium 6 is available anymore.
